The state of Ohio requires all students of compulsory school age to maintain good attendance at school. Ohio law describes compulsory school age as six to eighteen. (O.R.C. 3321.01).
The State of Ohio changed laws governing truancy effective September 2, 2000 in an effort to eliminate problems that cause truancy. Definitions for Habitual and Chronic Truant were created. Students with good attendance generally receive higher grades, enjoy school more and are more employable after high school.
The state of Ohio requires all students of compulsory school age to maintain good attendance at school. Ohio law describes compulsory school age as six to eighteen. (O.R.C. 3321.01).
Definitions:
Habitual Truant: 5 or more consecutive school days, 7 or more school days in one school month, 12 or more school days in a school year.
Chronic Truant: 7 or more consecutive school days, 10 or more school days in one school month, 25 or more school days in a school year.
School month is 4 school weeks; school week consists of 5 days.
Parental Responsibility: It is the parent's responsibility to ensure their child's regular attendance at school. Failure to send your child to school is a violation of Ohio School Law. Criminal charges can be filed against a parent/guardian/custodian of a child who is a habitual or chronic truant. These charges can be one of the following; Contributing, Criminal Prohibition (fail to send), Parental Educational Neglect, Child Endangering.
Child's Responsibility: It is the child's responsibility to attend school daily unless they have a valid excuse. Attending school is the child's job for the first 18 years of their life. Failure to attend may result in unruly or delinquency charges in the juvenile court.
**Students and parents are encouraged to submit a doctor/dentist note. After 10 absences without documentation from a doctor/dentist, one will be required for every absence after 10 or the absence will be considered unexcused.
School's Responsibility: It is the responsibility of the school to organize and coordinate communication among all persons involved. We will work as a team with family to follow through with attendance compliance. Along with the courts, we will provide the family with referrals to appropriate community resources.
Regular attendance is the legal responsibility of the parents and the law requires that legal action be taken against parents who do not keep their children in school regularly.
When you must be absent, the following procedure is to be followed:
1. Your parent/guardian should phone the school between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM, to inform the school that you will be absent that day. The High School number is (937) 289-2109. Parents/guardians who do not call the school may be notified by phone call or post card of your absence.
2. The first day following an absence, you must present a note from your parent/guardian and/or doctor's excuse indicating the date(s) of absence and reason(s) for the absence to the office.
3. Your agenda book will be signed by the office to indicate either excused or unexcused for the absence, tardy, or early dismissal. Your agenda book must be signed by the office and shown to each teacher in order to receive make-up assignments and be readmitted to class.
4. Notes for absences and early dismissals must come from the parent/guardian of all students, including 18-year old students. Parents should indicate the reason for your absence to help the administration determine whether or not your absence can be excused.
5. If homework was assigned or a test announced prior to the your absence, the teacher may require that the work turned in or the test taken at the regular time. Otherwise, assigned make-up work must be completed within the same number of days missed, starting with the day after your return to school and receive the assignments. If the make-up period carries over into the next grading period, an incomplete will be recorded on the grade sheets and report cards. At the end of the make-up period, any work not completed will be recorded as zero, and the grade will be averaged. This grade will replace the Incomplete.
6. Absence from school during semester or final exams will require a doctor's note and/or special approval from the assistant principal or principal.
